12 September 2019 – DAY 8 (Navarette)

We walked early today. It was quite a flat road which was good. Amazing how after a week you start walking through your pain threshold. Even my blisters take quicker to adjust to the boots. I met a man from the Philippines who is 72 and a professor in Asian studies in California. There are many Americans here! So far, the last 2 to 3 days it was beautiful scenery as we walked through the vineyards of Rioja and Navarra. I think they will have less wine this year due to all the Pellegrinos eating the grapes on their way. Nejero looks interesting. Interesting little windows in the rock face. We struggled to find space to sleep… This is an eleventh century town we stay in and the name in Arabic means ‘between the rocks’. It was an old Roman town. Will explore later on. So far, my routine is as follows: eat, sleep, walk, repeat!! As soon as I get to an Albergue I shower and wash the day’s clothes – I sleep in the clean clothes and can then simply get up and go the next morning. I’m trying really hard to have rest days, but don’t think it will work for me… I’m in the walking mood and it feels wrong not to walk every day. Our rest days so far is merely the fact that we walk less km’s on the day. Beautiful towns, but don’t want to waste my energy exploring 😜 A big glass of red wine costs the same as a coke zero…. go figure!
